The Power of Smell: Is Your Home Ready to Sell?

There is a lot that goes into selling a home and making sure it is ready to go on the market. One thing that can easy to overlook is, does your home have a smell? Some things to take into consideration when you put your home on the market are: air quality, odor, pets, and holiday festivities.

Regarding the air quality of your home, some questions to ask yourself are:

  • What year was your house built?

  • Do you have asbestos or lead paint?

  • Do you have water issues?

  • Do you have mold or mildew?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you will want to get them addressed before opening your home to potential buyers. To keep unpleasant or lingering smells out of your home, be mindful of what you are cooking and when because potential buyers may be sensitive to smells.

Pets are another thing to keep in mind when showing your home. Some people are allergic or scared of pets, what are you going to do with them while your home is on the market?

The last thing to ask yourself is, what time of year are you planning on selling your home? Depending on the season, are there any holidays you will be decorating for? When selling your home, you want the potential buyer to envision themselves in the home. Keep your decorations simple and nondenominational so not to distract from the home’s appeal.

What are some of your pet peeves when viewing a home? Is there anything you would add?
