Stay Warm and Safe This Winter

The snow is finally here! Well, at least in the valley. For a time it seemed like Mother Nature wasn't going to give us any snow but she finally delivered. Utah usually sees a lot of snow during the winter and even though Mother Nature is having a slow start this year, be sure to stay safe and prepared with these tips. One of the best ways to stay safe this winter is to always watch or listen to the most up to date information on the weather. Have a disaster plan and supply kit for your home and car. In your kit, include a first aid kit, canned food and can opener. bottled water, battery-operated radio, flashlight, protective clothing, and blankets. Keep your cell phone with you and make sure it is fully charged because you never know when you will need it for an emergency. During a snowstorm or blizzard, if possible don’t leave your home, but if you do leave, dress in layers. Remember to wear a scarf or ski mask over your mouth and nose to protect your lungs against the extreme cold weather. Bring animals inside or add extra bedding to their homes. Remember to think of your animals this year and keep them protected from the cold. Even setting up a little bed for them in the garage is better than letting them sleep outside in the cold. If you have any questions, the Utah Humane Society is a great source to call. Another simple and important factor, keep a full tank of gas. Condensation can build up in the winter and cause your fuel line to freeze up. Always let others know where you are going and be a good neighbor by checking in and making sure everything is okay with them.
