History of Layton Utah

Being a resident of Layton, Utah it has been exciting to see all the progress coming to the city. Layton is continuing to grow and has come a long way since when it was first established back in 1886.

Officially named after Christopher Layton, business man and pioneer, Layton separated from Kaysville in 1907, becoming a town of its own. For a time Layton was broken into three parts: Layton, Laytona, and East Layton but by 1957 all three towns merged to become the Layton we know today.

Some interesting facts about Layton:

  • Alfalfa was Layton’s most popular crop in the early 1900s.
  • Layton had a business boom in 1946, following World War II, with its expanded population.
  • Ground was broken for Hill Air Force Base in 1940.
  • Layton High School opens in 1965.
  • Northridge High School opens 1992.
  • Layton Hills Mall opens in 1980.
  • Layton used to have a classic movie theater, the Ritz, at 96 North Main, that operated from 1941-1968.
